Soulac-sur-Mer is one of the most authentic and least mass-touristed seaside resorts on the French Atlantic coast. Listed among France's 'Stations classées de tourisme', it has a remarkable Belle Époque architectural heritage with its ornate 19th-century villas built for Bordeaux's bourgeoisie who came to take the waters. The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fin-des-Terres, dating from the 12th century and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route, is a major Romanesque jewel — its history is fascinating as the church was entirely buried by sand in the 18th century before being excavated. From the nearby Pointe de Grave (5 km), you board the Médoc-Verdon ferry to reach Royan in Charente-Maritime in just 20 minutes — a picturesque maritime crossing that fits perfectly into an Atlantic coast road trip. The Cordouan lighthouse, France's first lighthouse to be listed as a historic monument and recently inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list, can be visited from Pointe de Grave by boat at high tides. Soulac's beaches — Plage de l'Amélie, Plage du Logit, Plage de l'Amélie Sud — stretch for several kilometres between the dunes and the Atlantic.
