The Cité du Vin is far more than a museum: it is an immersive and sensory experience exploring wine and the civilisations that have shaped it from antiquity to the present day. Opened in June 2016 in the regenerated Bassins à Flot neighbourhood, it welcomes more than 400,000 visitors a year in a spectacular 13,500 m² building designed by architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières of the XTU practice. The sinuous copper-coloured silhouette of the building, inspired by the movement of wine in a glass and the meanders of the Garonne, has become a symbol of contemporary Bordeaux. The permanent exhibition across 3,000 m² offers 20 thematic universes exploring wine through history (from ancient Egypt to today's natural wines), geography (vineyards worldwide), arts and culture. Interactive devices, sensory installations and immersive projections make the visit accessible to all, even non-initiates. The 8th-floor belvedere offers a 360° panoramic view over Bordeaux, the Garonne and the vineyards, accompanied by a glass of wine included in the entry ticket. The Bassins à Flot neighbourhood itself is worth exploring: the former port and industrial zone is transforming into a new creative and residential district. Hangar 14, the new waterfront restaurant terraces, art galleries and street art spaces make for a fascinating walk between industrial heritage and modernity. Nearby, the Pont Chaban-Delmas — Europe's largest vertical-lift bridge — is a spectacle in itself when it rises to let large ships pass. In the evening, the neighbourhood comes alive and terraces fill until midnight.
